Years Practicing Kendo/Iaido:
30 Years Kendo / 12 Years Iaido
Locations Where Kendo was Learned:
I started kendo at the Seattle Kendo
Club, at that time there were only two
clubs, Seattle and Tacoma. Subsquently I made several trips to Japan to study kendo. I started iaido in Japan. I founded or co-founded the
University of
Washington Kendo Club, the
Highline Kendo Club and the
Bellevue Kendo
Club.
Teaching Philosophy Summarized:
The tenets and foundation of my teaching are:
-
Basics, basics, basics.
-
That kendo is both a martial art and a martial sport.
- That kendo is to teach people discipline, honor, group & people skills, task
and goal setting, and a fundamental philosophy of life for everyday work and
play.
-
That there are many ways down the path that lead to the same place and each
of has a different path.
-
That people do not come to kendo to be treated like they are something less
because they do not have the ability to hit someone with a stick. These adults
are already contributing successfully in their professional lives and should
be given respect and credit for this.
- That children deserve the same respect as adults but need special care and
guidance.
-
That teaching kendo offers you a chance to make a positive difference in someone
else's life and that is a wonderful thing.
